August is a big month for Indonesia as they celebrate their 73rd Independence Day and host the Asian Games, but unfortunately it’s been marred by yet another earthquake near Lombok, and this one has been even stronger and more destructive than the first. Though it’s easy to feel helpless in situations like this, it’s important to remember that we can all do something to help!

Donations of money, goods and volunteer work are all needed- let’s come together to do what we can! One option is donating to the Indonesian Red Cross through this donation portal, or to other Indonesian organizations now helping such as Indonesia Aid, Aksi Cepat Tanggap, and Dompet Dhuafa Republika. Other options include international organizations like Oxfam Australia and World Vision International, or GoFundMe drives like “Earthquake Relief for Lombok.” On top of this, goods can be sent directly through Garuda Indonesia airlines, which is running a 50% off deal on shipments of items to Lombok. There are also organizations specifically helping Lombok’s children, such as Lombok Forgotten Children: Endri Foundation, and Peduli Anak Foundation, which is an orphanage that was severely damaged in the quake. And spreading word-of-mouth about the earthquake and the many ways to assist is always good as well!

Though everyone is feeling the recent events deeply, the Indonesian people aren’t letting this dampen their festive spirit. On last Sunday, the Asian Games were welcomed to Jakarta in spectacular (and distinctly Indonesian) fashion with a Guinness World Record breaking massive Poco Poco dance! Poco Poco is a line dance believed to have originated in East Indonesia for a hit song in the early 90s, and is now popular for exercise, especially among middle-aged women. Over 65,000 participants showed up and danced in a shockingly huge crowd that covered three kilometers. Even President Jokowi joined in the fun!

But Jakarta is a city for thinking as well as for dancing. In exciting news for the intellectuals out there, or anyone who just loves a stimulating discussion, this year’s TEDx Jakarta event is coming up on September 8th! The topics will focus on humanity’s relationship to Earth and the Universe. It’s sure to blow your mind. Read more at our link here.

Finally, Chope (the wonderfully convenient restaurant reservation app and website) is getting in the patriotic spirit! To celebrate Indonesia’s 73 years of independence, Chope is giving their top 73 app users 1,000 Chope-Dollars each! Plus, the Top App-User also wins a “One-night weekend staycation for two at Keraton at The Plaza Hotel, Jakarta” and the Runner-Up wins a “Romantic Dinner for Two.” Book a table via the Chope app at any restaurant in Jakarta or Bali, and dine by 31st August 2018 to qualify! Download the Chope app here to get started.
